Since last summer, I have been looking for some Bermuda-length jean shorts. I have tried on, bought, and returned several, mostly because they just didn’t sit/feel right, or they seemed too polished, or the fringe looked too manufactured. I love thrift stores but I have a mental block against buying anything secondhand that sits too close to the crotch, so I wasn’t motivated to purchase an already-well-worn pair.
Then a few weeks ago, after seeing long jean shorts absolutely everywhere (including on my own husband), I decided they might be a little too trendy, so I officially gave up the search.
Until I read this post by
, the denim queen who writes the Substack, !Waaaay back in the day I used to just cut my own to great success (see below) but the thought of doing that now frightened me.

For one, I really love most of the denim I own today, just as they are. And second, most of them cost $$$ so I wasn’t comfortable just hacking them away. Especially not after my failed Sassy pillowcase dress experiment (I have never wore that top again, BTW).
But Jane instilled a confidence in me, and I loved the way hers looked. So I dug into my jeans drawer to fish out an old beloved pair that was too big/baggy on me, but I could never part with because I have a very special place in my heart for my AG jeans. Also, this particular pair was my favorite when I used to struggle with binge eating, and I keep it around in case my size changes again.
So picking up the scissors was quite scary for me. I followed Jane’s directions to a T (sidebar: she’s got a great post about white T’s too) and it was easy! I was surprised to learn that not only do I own/remember how to use a seam ripper, but I have yellow thread, too.

The result — the perfect pair of jeans shorts! The denim is soooo thin and soft, perfectly worn-in (by moi!) making it the ideal summer fabric. Plus, they remind me of how far I’ve come with my eating disorder. I 👖 them so much more now that I’ll actually wear them.
Jane did not recommend pairing the shorts with something this casual, but I can’t picture wearing this Garfield shirt with anything else.

Thank you, Jane! Again, here is the link to the post so you can cut your own.
I'm sorry that you've struggled with eating disorders *good vibes*. I also refuse to say "jorts" - what a horrendous word! Good job on making your own - they look fantastic! Well done!
They’re perfect on you!
