I made a conscious decision last November to get off social media and stop feeding the algorithm. One of the biggest changes was that I stopped making YouTube videos, something I actually love doing. Nonetheless, this past year I made most of them private and turned off the comments — because I’m going through a lot of personal stuff. And it felt too vulnerable.
I hated seeing the stats: how many people unsubscribed, how few people were watching, and the only occasional comment being a mean and random one from a stranger. (BTW I hate seeing stats here on Substack too and avoid them by bookmarking my page to posts only. The dashboard can be so cruel and these platforms can really be mentally harmful.)
I also wanted to be taken seriously as a filmmaker/director/writer. I noticed a lot of filmmakers who are on YouTube stop or disappear from the platform the second they find success. After I Will Make You Mine got into SXSW, I kept waiting for the right moment for me.
