I Want to Read More Books
I have a stack of books next to my bed, all half-read, or begging to be opened. A few years ago I developed this habit of listening to audiobooks on double speed while I clean or take a walk, and for some reason I can only seem to absorb non-fiction. This would explain why my 2022 Reading List was made up of mostly memoirs, or self help.
It’s something I want to change — my very short attention span. I know that social media is to blame for a lot of it, but I also know that I have a lot of trouble slowing down in general (hence the 2x speed and the multi-tasking).
But recently I got COVID (thankfully I was asymptomatic and tested negative after 5 days) so I decided it was time to make reading a priority again. I used to love reading while eating when I was a kid, so I thought that would be a good place to start.
Instead of turning on YouTube during my solo meals (which was tempting, since one of my birthday gifts to myself was an ad-free Premium Subscription), I opened one of the many novels I’ve been meaning to get to. I used a cookbook stand (mine appears to now be discontinued but here’s a similar one) to keep the pages open and splatter free.
And so far, it’s been working! Taking the time to digest my food and ingest the story simultaneously has gotten me to finish one book already and now I’ve started
’s Either/Or, which I’m already 60 pages into and loving. My aim is to keep these posts sponsor-free, so if you’d like to support me directly with a paid subscription, that would be very helpful.
