Gen x Taste is a lifestyle blog and newsletter for those who still don’t know what they want to be when they grow up (even if they’re over the age of 40).
Susan : She kept a diary. It's great stuff. [Reading] "Couldn't sleep. Went into kitchen. Gary came in, turned on light. Gary left. Finished birthday cake." Pages of it. It's got to be a cover, nobody's life could be this boring!
Gary: You shouldn’t be reading that, it’s private.
- Desperately Seeking Susan, 1985
It’s finally legitimately HOT in Los Angeles and I started thinking about my favorite pool look which was Madonna’s in Desperately Seeking Susan. Madonna introduced me to my first must-have fashion item in elementary school — rubber bracelets. You can still buy them online in bulk (I now prefer black over neon).
If you look closely, Madonna actually wears (what I think) is a rubber bracelet as an anklet in this scene, coupled with a simple chain. We also have a lacy black underwire bra and men’s boxer shorts. Worn as a bathing suit! The 80’s were all about women getting in/out of pools (ahem Phoebe Cates) and I love the idea of not being prepared with a traditional suit. SO SPONTANEOUS. Also, I think there is nothing sexier than the combo of mens’ and women’s underwear.
