Ice Skating Fashion from "The Cutting Edge"
Kate: What do you do, shower once a week?
Doug: Is that an invitation?
- The Cutting Edge, 1992
I really dislike sports. BUT I LOVE THE OLYMPICS. My first-ever SAG/AFTRA job was for the 1996 Olympics (I did a voiceover for diver Fu Mingxia’s athlete profile). And as excited as I am to welcome the Summer Games to my city in two years, I will always have a special place in my heart for the Winter Olympics.
Because, ice skating.
I could watch ice skating all day.
I’ll never forget watching Kristi Yamaguchi win gold in 1992. There were so few Asian-American women on TV to look up to, and she was much more accessible to me than Connie Chung.
The truth is, I’m truly terrible at it ice skating. But that hasn’t stopped me from appropriating skating fashion for as long as I can remember.
Now… I don't actually like most performance outfits I see on the ice during competition. But what they practice in? My idea of perfection.
Basically, I’m talking about all of Moira Kelly’s looks as “Kate” in The Cutting Edge. Christy and I randomly referenced the film in our last podcast, and it got me thinking about how good the clothes were.

Confession: I would play this workout montage (click the video below) in my head to psych myself up for the mile run junior/senior year. And yes, that is Terry O’Quinn (“John Locke” from Lost) at the end of the clip!
This movie also taught me how to do a tequila shot, and I’m pretty sure I dressed in all black with sunglasses whenever I had a hungover (last time I had one was in my 20’s).

I refuse to watch any of the sequels. But if the fashion is good, maybe I will.
P.S. For more Winter Olympic-inspired looks, check out Christina Tumminello’s post: Inspired By: Milan Cortina 2026. And there are some cool home goods over at Leonora Epstein’s post: Vintage Olympics.
P.P.S. More movie looks: Can’t Buy Me Love, Desperately Seeking Susan, Kicking and Screaming, Eric Rohmer’s films, and When Harry Met Sally.

Thanks for the mention, Lynn! Putting Cutting Edge at the top of my to be watched list, I can’t believe I haven’t seen it!!!
Probably my all time favorite sports movie. "Just remember who said it first." And anytime someone says figure skating, my sister and I respond "finger painting?" Literally did it yesterday.
